Back in Istanbul 1

This morning we visited the 15th century Yedicule Fortress, known as the Castle of 7 Towers.  As is so often the case major renovation works were ongoing.

Each of the towers was used for a different purpose; storage of precious goods, documents, armoury, coins and gold and silver ingots.  This particular tower was used as a royal dungeon and housed many notable prisoners back in the day.

We all climbed to the top of one of the towers and the view across the Sea of Marmara was pretty impressive with all the shipping lined up waiting for the tide to turn

Modern day Istanbul's skyscrapers in the distance.

These horse sculptures were being exhibited in the grounds; I found them too stylised for my taste and thought they looked like My Little Pony.

Mmmm not sure he's going to manage without a mounting block (especially facing the wrong way).

Back now into the centre of Istanbul Old City and a quick trip to the Egyptian Spice Market.

Lots of dried fruits for sale.

And cezerye, a sticky dessert made from carrots, coconut and lots of walnuts, hazelnuts or pistachios.

And of course a few souvenirs on offer too.

Deliberately out of focus as I don't like photographing strangers this close without asking permission.
